Salivator Puffing or Threat Display?

Yesterday I was observing them and the male took offence. He devloped a high spinal ridge and a ridge on his belly where the red stripe is, making him look bigger.

He did this 5 or 6 times and it seemed no effort to him, ridges up and within a split second ridges down. he did it once to the female as he chased her off.

He didnt seem to take in any water and his body flattened out more than puffing up.

Has anyone seen any of the other Carinotetraodons puff or exhibit this behaviour as a comparison?

I've seen my male DPs do it. It mostly happened during feeding, unfortunately I only have 1 male now and he hasn't done it since the other male died.

Courtship and/or territorial behaviour.
All carinotetraodons are "keeled" or "ridged".
In German they are called "Kammkugelfisch".

Yes, I think "carino" has some relationship with the greek word for "keel" as well.

Mine have also done this, I think it's done as a threat, as he displays it a lot to a cichlid he's in with.

My DP Boeing does this when he is challenging the other male in his tank... I have (slightly foggy) pictures if anyone is interested.
