It's really hard to tell from the pics, little bugger won't sit still if we're in the room. His left side has a very large gill "vent" just before his side fin (pardon the lack of terminology). I can see clearly into it from a rear-left angle, and it looks pinkish red in there. On his right side it's almost imperceptible, but there's a fine white slit just before his side fin, and it doesn't move as he breathes. Looks to me like Bubbles is a "mutie" lol. He might not live to be 15, but I'll try my best to give him a good comfortable life.

He looks pretty big right now. What size? He may already be a couple years old. If all other behaviour is normal and he seems healthy, his mutation mustn't be harming him that badly.

No, he's not that big, he's only about an inch and a half long.
I had the camera on a nice tight zoom...

Anything is possible. I have a Jack Dempsey that it appears was born without an eye. We thought at first that he lost it in a fight but it appears as though he never had it. There's not even an eye socket, its just completely smooth where his eye should be. And I recently saw a picture of a critter without an eye or nose on one side. Mutations happen in animals just like they do in humans.

Well from what I'm guessing, if he was wild caught, and the estuaries of India aren't really the cleanest most pristine waters of the world...that's probably the heart of the matter.
You know, how some people have noticed some very horrific mutations coming out of the Great Lakes (Fish mutations that is...of course some of my former two legged friends used to go swimming in Hamilton Harbour...yich)
I'm not an ecogeek by any means but we'll be seeing more and more of these mutations in our aquatic pals I have a feeling..poor fishies...
At least I know that despite being in a glass box, their water quality, is much better than what they'd be getting in the wild...
And grammar I do have it, just not on my first cup of coffee
