Are white spots on the fins usually a first sign of Ich

If they look like tiny grains of salt, yes.

well it doesn't look like salt, more so just a little discoloration of the fin. i just finished treating with melafix for nipped fins. i will keep a close eye on if it changes at all.

Could be Lymphocystis. Are they mainly on the mouth and fins? Starting to look like cauliflower? In early stages it can look like ICH.

forgot about this post. everything has cleared up well, white spots gone...but still unsure of what it was.

It could have just been some minor injuries, scuffs and scrapes, healing up. Glad to hear he's doing well!
