We have got a tropical freshwater tank specifically for a puffer or 2 (30ltr) . Has any one got any suggestions for a good first puffer ? Pet shop has suggested Topaz puffer or possibly MBU Puffer. Do we need to add salt ? The tank has plenty of artificial plants/natural gravel/rocks/ornaments. Can species of puffers be mixed ? Any help would be much appreciated. thanks

Ok, first thing is NOT listening to those idiots anymore. Mbu are huge puffers! Best thing is to go to the Encyclopedia (link is up above) and read up on some of them and their requirements.

The only puffer that would live a comfortable life in a 30 ltr. tnk would be Dwarf Puffer. You might fit a male and 2 females in such a tank.

Topaz and especially T. mbu demands larger housing.
For a mbu we recommend nothing less than 3000 ltrs...

30 liters is about 7 gallons.

You could fit a couple dwarf puffers but not much else.

The tank is much to small for any other type of puffer, and certainly not an Mbu. A Mbu requires at least 1000 gallons. They get huge. I'm appaled the petshop suggested a Mbu for a 7 gallon tank.

30 gallons is a good starting place if you are interested in puffers.

Well, definately not the MBU puffer, that is the largest freshwater puffer out there, requiring a thousand gallons or more to truely be comfortable. If your local fish store recommended that for a 30 liter tank, do not, I repeat, do NOT believe much of anything else they tell you.

I can't remember off the top of my head which puffer is commonly called "topaz".. If you go up to the link at the top of the page, the Puffer Encyclopedia, you can look up the various types of puffers, how big they get, what size tanks they need, etc.

30 liters is a pretty small tank, so you are going to be a bit more limited as to what you can keep in it.

I second that, your tank is roughly 8 gallons. 2 Dwarf Puffers at the most.

I think Ceylons are sometimes called topaz puffers. If so, not an option for this tank.
