distinguishing species

i just bought some female irrubesco puffers (sadly, they had no males) anyhoo, i know the difference between male lorteti and irrubesco, but is there a difference between the females of those species?? they look very similar from pictures i have seen. thank you much and take care

Irrubescos have red tails.

The females of C. irrubesco, C. lorteti, C. salivator & probably C. borneensis looks very close to identical.
According to Dr. Ebert they can (as a general rule) be told apart by their belly pattern.
C. lorteti. Monochrome with indistinct spotting.
C. salivator. Continous black stripes
C. irrubesco Interrupted black stripes
C. borneensis. No data availiable
There are also slight differences in the Caudal fin bars and the placement of the eyes.
(No red tail on the females, sorry Boxermom.)

Oh. Looks like red tails in the photos and thats what I was told. *shrug*

it seems to me that the irrubesco have much brighter red eyes than lorteti. would this be correct??

That might depend on the individual puffer, I think. also the way the light's hitting them.
