Is there two slightly different types of dwarf that exist...

Never heard of two species of DP. My females sometimes have the tiny freckles like in the second picture, though.

They are both dwarf puffers. There is an imitating dwarf puffer, although I don't know if there's a way to tell them apart. Some DPs have more freckles than others, some have blue spots and some have black. In Dr. Ebert's Aqualog puffer book, he has pictures of both but the imitating don't seem to have more freckles, their spots are just more faded.

Possibly just a variation of markings of the same species like the article says.

It still is a dwarf puffer or does it turn out different or somethin??? what makes them different, one is pretending to be a dwarf???


i just saw a puffer in my lfs, said it was a red eye puffer, it had a target spot thing on it though, three of them in a little tank, they were sitting on the bottom of the tank looking really sad!


i bought some sand and my filter, so the tank will be ready for my arrival of dwarfs!!! or pretendy dwarfs

LFS names for puffers are often incorrect.
Don't suppose you noticed what colour spot it was?

Most likely a fangs puffer (t.cochinchensis) or an abei puffer (t.abei).

Red eyes are not dwarfs. There puffers with red eyes and target spots, all get much bigger than DPs. Imitating DPs are still DPs. As I said, I don't know what makes them different, Dr. Ebert wasn't very clear on distinguishing the two.

pretty sure it was red like the fang puffer but it had very dim colour and not much markings

The fangs have a black spot, probably an Abei. Their colours can vary dramtically depending on their mood.

its incredible how a big company garden centre can get the names so wrong, it could end up in killing the fish!

they must have seen its red ayes and just assumed that was what it was....do the people who supply fish not care what they sell to the shops???

They're a specialist fish and some shops dont have staff experienced to correctly identify certain species. but even more experienced staff at specialist shops can get the names wrong as I found out until I came on here.

not as bad as the shop closest to my flat... they were selling GSP as dwarfs...told me a could have 5 in my 15 gallon, "easilly"

Have you cycled the tank??

yeh its a tank i had a community in, iv just got another, bigger filter im going to run alongside untill its got its bacteria in it etc then im taking out the smaller one and starting a small tank
