Grey slime disease - a possible cure

Rather than post a problem, I thought I'd share a solution.
Within a couple of weeks of buying two C. irrubesco, I noticed that the male had what seemed to be large sheets of slime or dead skin coming off his body. There were no whitespots, fungus threads, or cysts, but there was some reddening, suggesting dead tissue and sores. For want of anything better, I dipped the fish in full-strength seawater for 20 minutes.
In seawater the puffer didn't thrash about or show any signs of distress. In fact it simply rested quietly, presumably waiting for the ordeal to finish.
Twenty four hours later, practically all the slime had vanished. The symptoms reappeared after a week, so I did another dip, and so far it's been fine. The female showed signs of the same disease, and was treated in the same way, and again seems to have made a full recovery.
I still don't know what the exact problem was, and would be curious to hear from anyone who has seen the same thing.
