The Puffer Forum

Well, since we're moving, we decided to give our 40 gallon tank to our my wife's little sister. That was the tank that we had our Ceylon puffer in. He got moved to a 55 gallon tank - talk about moving space. Lucky him. LOL.

Anyways....I knew that at some point the 55 gallon we have setup that has 3 GSPs in them (the ones I rescued) had to have 1 of the GSPs moved out of it for the sake of the puffers not stunting....

So, to fix the situation, I took the smaller of the GSPs and put him in with the Ceylon (the smaller one was being pushed around a little by the other 2 because they were bigger). The Ceylon and the GSP are getting along perfectly. When I first put the GSP in with the Ceylon, they kinda nuzzled each other (kinda weird), checking each other out, but neither were aggressive to each other.

When I fed them, they ate in peace, taking turns getting the food. So, I guess our tanks should be fine now. Yay. I'll definitely keep an eye on them for a few days or so though.

sounds good! what size tank is the ceylon and GSP in though? I would think they would need around a minimum of 60g.

For both of them and nothing more a 55 would be good for the both of them, but bigger is better

I have 2 55 gallon tanks setup. One has 2 GSPs, and the other has 1 GSP and a Ceylon. Nothing more will go in either tank (well, other than more deco).

I disagree that a 55 is adequate for a GSP and ceylon. Ceylons grow to 8", GSP's to 6". Not enough room IMHO.

hmmm, I think that a 55g would prevent stunting, but I agree with LL that there wouldnt be enough room for them to be happy when full grown.

IMO I would go with a 75g or larger.(you could have potential tank mates as well. thats just a maybe lol)

Im going to have to disagree with you john. Lisa is right, a 55 is really too small for any extended length of time with those two fish.

the amount of waste alone would cripple most tanks.


Great pumpkinator if you can, get access to as much filtration as possible. a ceylon and full size gsp will put out a huge bioload, and stocking up slowly now will save you a big headache later

Start finding sales on buckets of salt, as 50%+ WC on those tanks, are gonna cost you $$$. For mine, in marine conditions, at 50% weeklys, that was 10cups/wk.

Investing in liverock and a good protein skimmer can help a lot.

Are either of those necessary for raising F8's?

No. Figure 8's stay at low end brackish (~SG 1.005).
Live rock and protein skimmers only work in marine conditions (~SG 1.018+).

ahhhh, ok. I dont think I took into consideration that a ceylon gets a bit bigger then a GSP when I posted that.

ah well, you guys have a lot more exp then me. but im getting there lol.

Don't feel bad John. I wish every day that it weren't the case, because I'd absolutely love to have a ceylon in my 55g with my GSP. :p
