how many irrubescos can i safely have in a 20H? It will be pretty heavily planted and have a few caves. Also, would otos become food in this tank? are there any tankmates they could have with coverage?

I'd stick w/1 pair. Ottos are a possibility.

I personally had 2 pairs in a 20 long. I had it broken into 2 sections with a thick row of rotala indica splitting the tank in 2 with both sides being heavily planted. The males never thought of it having something on the other side but the females would bolt through the stuff to out run the male. It was fun to watch but then alas a lighting storm hit and had to blow up one of my heaters in the tank, more or less instantly killing the fish.

But I agree with PP in a 20 H it would be a lot better to house a single pair.

i ended up getting a pair of females. I wanted a male but they looked very thin and sickly. alot bigger than the females though.

they are best kept in pairs. My female killed all the other females in her tank (lorteti). Could you wait for a male? They're prettier too!

uh ohh. i already got them before i read that last post. i will watch for hostility between them and deal accordingly. i have a friend that is willing to take one if things dont work out. I am turning him to the dark side . The puffer side by the way, i cant find a care sheet on these puffers. like how often to feed and what not. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check out the Puffer List? Feed as any puffer, until rounded tummy, 1x/day, skipping 1 day/week. Blood/blackworms, freeze-dried krill/plankton, crickets, etc.

I read this in the arrowhead sticky "The feeding structure of this fish should consist of feedings every other day, while the specimen is less than four inches in size and once a week at four-six inches." I was wondering if there was anything like that for these guys. I guess active hunters require more food.
