A irrubesco or lorteti?

I previously had trouble with differing between two red-tailed red eye or red eyed puffers. This is to help all who needs to know the difference.

Wow. That is really helpful. Did you make that?
I could tell the differences before but now I'm absolutely positive there was a Lorteti at my LFS.

Yea, i did make that, and that's what I mean when I said the LFS could confuse them, so can other people, leading to dead tank mates. I hope you now recognize the two and I hope it helped.

Nice work!
Yet; am afraid it is a bit more complicated than that...
The male of both species goes through changes in colour and physical appearance depending on mood.
It is really facinating to watch them "morph".
These two pictures are of the same male C. irrubesco in two different moods.
Nice?
The male Carinotetraodon also have a "crest" or "keel" which it will use in courtship and aggression.
The fish will expand the top and bottom of its body in order to appear larger.
The picture of the male C. lorteti shows this in a really nice way.

Never have seen my irrubesco male change to a pattern that bright, but the occasional stripes do show. As for the hump on the lorteti... that I havn't seen, yet I havn't seen my lortetis in my tank for a while now...

So if these guys are "keeled" puffers, are they built more like SW tobies? I love the pictures of these guys! Keep 'em coming!
(C. irrubesco are on my list of "dream" puffers...)
