Is an amazon puffer the right choice?

Hello!
Not really sure if this is the right spot for this question as I'm new here but I figure it's worth a shot and if it's not the right spot I will happily delete the post.
To start with I have a fully cycled 30 gallon tank. I do have live plants some decorations a 60 gallon sponge filter and a bubbler currently in my tank. It has been up and running for almost a year. It started off as a tank for my kids but i have taken over all care for the tank. I want a pufferfish, just not sure which is the right fit for what I have.
I would really like a fully freshwater pufferfish as I have no experience with brackish or saltwater tanks. Also, I'd like 1 pufferfish on the bigger side rather than multiple on the smaller side.
I was looking at a spotted congo puffer but.. for 1 i believe i don't have a big enough tank as my tank is more tall than it is long. And for 2 I'm not sure if I can keep them in California. (Local fish shop said i couldnt)
I was also looking at the pea puffer but have realized that it's to small for my liking.
Next up I was looking at the Amazon puffer. It seems like it could be a good fit, but unsure.
I've never taken care of a pufferfish before so any and all help/advice would be much appreciated.
If an amazon puffer is not the right fit, would you be willing to recommend a pufferfish that would be?
If any more information is needed please ask and I'll happily provide that information.
Thank you in advanced.
