While at the LFS today I noticed they appeared to be tearing down some of their reptile section. I noticed a dirty 55 gallon tank and asked the guy if its for sale. He said he would give it to me for $50!
So the LFS guy took the tank and tested it for leaks and it holds water! So of course I purchased it, all it needs is a wet paper towel.
My two GSPs now have a real home and it cost as much as their orginal 25G
So my plan is to get a bag of crushed coral for the substrate and aquascape with moon rock (base rock). One question I had is how much salt should i need to prepare the first batch og 55G water. 10 gallons worth of salt ~1/5 seawater?

Dry measurements are not reliable. If I were you, I'd buy the tub of salt; it is much cheaper in the long run.

Personally, I wouldn't use a reptile tank for fish... Be sure to clean the tank extremely well. I'd use Oxyclean & scrub, scrub, scrub!

Which kind are you refering too? The powered stuff?

I'd use a vinegar/water solution to clean the tank aswell.

I would not mix the chemicals as you can produce a toxic gas that can kill you. Seriously. Choose one and use it, don't do many.
A strong bleach mix can also be used, just make sure you rinse it repeatedly with a strong batch of declorinated water and leave it to dry in the sun. Once it dries, if you smell anymore bleach, treat with declorinator again and repeat until you can't smell it anymore.

Way less rinsing involved & no dechlor necesary w/Oxyclean. Highly recommended by RTR himself!

Vinegar is just as easy. Just have to rinse it out and test params after the tank is filled to make sure (if there is any vinegar still in there) that it did not drop the PH of the tank.

How does one know what chemicals are safe for use on fish tanks?
Before I wouldn't have guessed oxyclean was!
