Over fed puffer looking very unwell

Hi! I have an green spotted puffer who has always been massively food motivated. Day before yesterday he was given a price of mussel way too big for him, like 50-30% of his own body size. I managed to get a piece away but it was still too much, part of it hanging out of his mouth. Yesterday he was completely still, looking dark and shallow breathing. There was also a pile of chewed up and spat out food. Today he is still the same but perhaps looking even worse and breathing more rapidly and sat on the bottom motionless.
Is he going to be okay and just digesting slowly?This is what I was hoping yesterday but the fact he seems no better is worrying me.
When do I need to intervene and see if he has something stuck? How do I do that? Will it just stress him out?
To note I've left him with lights out and unbothered since I realised there was a problem.
1. pH 8, specific gravity at ~1.018
2. 108L and just him
3. Salt, usually food is a couple of snails or a reasonably sized bit of mussel, like a sixth to a quarter
4. None
5. Tank is a year old
