How long do you leave clams in with your GSP?

Hello everyone. My wife and I are the proud new caretakers of a little GSP (less than an inch long right now.)

He's in a 20 gal tank while we cycle a 55 gal and get it ready for full marine. We will be acclimating him in the 20 while the 55 cycles. I got about 20 ghost shrimp (wanted 12, but the LFS just scooped a net-full and let me have the extras for free) as a clean up crew/food source for him, though right now he's too small to bug them.

Anyway, I've read much about giving GSPs clams on the half shell to trim their teeth and provide dietary variety. Our little guy has pecked at it a few times, but right now the shrimp are enjoying it more than him. Currently he only seems to go nuts for bloodworms. I certainly wouldn't leave it in for more than a day, but what's the optimal time to be sure it doesn't foul the water? Half an hour, an hour or two, an afternoon?

Looking forward to learning a lot from this forum. Thanks in advance.

One of my puffers seems to like his clams at night, so I have left them in where overnight but he's in a 120g tank. A couple of hours in a smaller tank. Are you cracking it open for him?

Hello, and thanks for your reply.

I bought them frozen and already opened on the half shell. I defrost them in a little bowl of water from his tank.

Try soaking it in a little bit of garlic juice
