Hello. I have recently acquired 1 figure 8 puffer. He is not eating anything and has a weird pink spot on the nose.
Could somebody please help.
I AM A BEGINNER TO PUFFERFISH.
Tank size - 15gallons
Tankmates - 2 guppies
This tank is very new (2 weeks) I do water changes every week 20%.
The tank is still cycling (I made an impulse purchase) but I use prime to detox ammonia and nitrites (tell me if I am doing anything wrong)
ammonia - very low, I test at pet stores, so no accurate numbers. < 0.5ppm
nitrite - rather high, but, again, I am detoxing with prime. 2 - 3ppm
nitrate - I'm not sure, but Petco told me It is fine.

Use Tetra Safestart (I've found it at Walmart) to get that tank cycled. ANY amount of ammonia/nitrite is toxic! Do an 80% water change & then add it directly to your filter. Get yourself an API test kit, you're going to need it throughout the time you keep fish. Rehome the guppies. In a week, start doing 50% WC/week. Prime is good!

Hello. I have already used tetra safestart (the entire bottle). Could you explain why I would need to rehome guppies? This is my only tank, first one at that.

Good news: The puffer ate a bit of clam in garlic extract today!

I'm still a little bit worried about the pink spot on his nose, I also noticed 2 black dots under his chin.

Could you explain why I would need to rehome guppies?
The bacteria in your tank has been created to support the 2 guppies. By adding the puffer, you now need bacteria to support that fish, which there isn't enough of. If you rehome the guppies, the bacteria can support the puffer. Also, 15g is the bare minimum for a single puffer--nothing more.
