The Puffer Forum

You can call me Stew! I am a firefighter and love fish. I grew up with all sorts of fish and then life took over and I was out of the hobby for a long time. About 4 years ago I got back into the hobby but went to salt water. It was probably the challenge that took me there. I have a great time and learned a lot but because of my hectic schedule and me being gone for 24 plus hours at a time it just became overwhelming.

This leads me to now.

I have a 40 gallon all in one tank. I currently have some various freshwater fish and an Amazon puffer. I also have a small tank where I keep snails.

I am very interested and have spend hours online researching puffers. I want a puffer with a personality that will fit my tank. I don't care if it has to be by itself. I have people I can give my fish to.

Can someone pretty please educate me. I believe I can get a hair puffer but it seems like they lay around a lot and aren't active swimmers?

What about a red eye red belly puffer? This is the only name I know it has?

I will take all advice at this time.

I am fully prepared to learn and take care of it!!!!

Both puffer species you have named are "lurkers". This means they lay around (often hidden) until food is there. I keep both species & love them but if I was only to keep 1 puffer, those wouldn't be it. If you're willing to try your hand at BW & slowly go up to SW, the GSP would be the most personable puffer I know of, that would fit a tank <100g.

Well... more work than a FW puffer But well worth it!

Yup--just ask away! I get on here a couple of times/day, when I can.
