Howdy,
So I saw a hairy puffer and fell in love. I've done a ton of research and have a good tank going for him thats established and he'll be alone. It's heavily planted tank with sand substraight. I've been raising RCS for years now and this tank has all the low quality ones in it. Maybe 1000-1500 shrimp. What I dont' know and can't find is will he gorge himself on shrimp?

I don't care if the destorys the colony. But i don't want him to over eat them. Do puffers over eat? Should I just trap all the shrimp first?

Mine is a huge pig but does stop after 2 servings of people shrimp, worms or scallops.

So I'm tempted to be "that guy". The hairy at the LFS is about 1.5 inches long. I setup a 44 for him but it needs to cycle. I've caught a lot of the RCS colony but there are still tons in there. Could he live in there for the 6 weeks I'm guessing it will take for the 44 to cycle? Or is this the worst Idea I've had in a while.

Safestart in your filter & add fish.

Thanks Pufferpunk. I've just never used safe start before and been a little scared with an expensive fish. That being said I'm going to go for it tomorrow.



The rocks and driftwood were in other tanks for weeks. So hopefuly they have enough bacteria on them. There is a waterfall in the middle as well with a filter pad from a cycled tank too. Tomorrow I"ll add the safe start and the puffer.

Is that center cave going to work or do they want something darker? The hairy I'm getting is just a bit over 1-1.5 inches. He's eating worms at the store. I'm going to feed him ram horns, worms, and shrimp to start.
