I have a marineland emperor 400 on my 50g GSP tank and am very happy with it so far, I like the extra media room for bio-rings, purigen etc plus they have the biowheels so I was thinking of maybe getting another marineland filter however I'd love any other opinions/recommendations.

The tank (used) came with a aquaclear 40 although I haven't cleaned it up or tested it yet.

side question: does the 50% weekly water change rule apply to DP's also?

The 50% wc rule applies to DP's. Aquaclears are great filters. I like them more than the marinland emperors. I just got my first cannister filter a few days ago. Everything people say about them is true. They are infinitely quieter than HOBs, and they are much easier to setup (which I assume translates to maintenance as well). A Rena XP1 would do the job on your 25g.

50% wc's for DP's. It's easy on a FW tank, so it won't be a big hassle. I too love Aquaclears; I'd go with an aquaclear 50 or 70. You said it came with an aquaclear 40...I belive it goes from 30 to 50, with no 40 model.

Opps... just checked, its a Whisper 40, not an aquaclear. I'll look into one of the larger aquaclears... unless I decide to go with a canister for my GSP tank and just toss the emperor on the 35g... decisions decisions LOL
