I was wondering if I could put a star fish with my porc puff. He is pretty mellow, and leaves the crabs he is with alone. My girlfriend is begging for a starfish and got offered a good deal on one of these:

I do have someone with experience with these stars and said he will help me out if I needed it

The blue linkia is not a good star to start with & have a high death rate. The red one however, is a pretty good starter starfish & mine is doing great. Personally, I wouldn't chance one w/a puffer, you're risking their life in there. Don't be surprised to notice your crabs missing one day too. Puffers are sneaky!

He was with this crab at the LFS for over a month and doesn't even look at it as food. I am using a lot of empty shells in the tank to confuse him if he does want to eat it.

I think i can talk her into waiting until i get a reef tank so the star wont be lunch

what size is the porc you have? 2-3 inches? it is very unlikely that it knows that starfish are food yet. given that most of mine havent figured that out at well over 5 inches. you can TRY it. however id have a backup tank ready just incase your puffer is a smart one

If you have to try a star, I'd try one with a better survival record than that blue linkia.

What about a brittle star?

I havn't had experience with brittle stars but i would be careful if you have small fish in the tank, the speed in which they move tells me they could catch and eat a small fish no problem, however my dogface would rip it to shreds

no small fish. just the puff and a coral beauty angel
