I have a problem with red slime in my current set up
but treat by wiping down whatever needs wiping down
because my set up is rather simple at the moment.
but, after viewing some stock footage of wild puffers, I would like to make complex rock formations in my tank
this would mean there would be (more) nooks and cranny's that were difficult to scrub

So I'm wondering about your experiences with red slime removers (chemicals)

FW/BW/SW? I've had great success with Chemiclean.

Great! What happens to the slime? ie. Does it dissolve, detach from the rocks, or just die?

You should try to get off as much as you can with a brush & as per the directions, you must do a WC to remove all the dead stuff.

I can't view your gallery at the moment for some reason but I imagine your tanks have decor with a lot of caves and hidey holes?
Would you take apart the lot each time you treated?

Just brush off whatever you can reach, because the die off can crash your tank. Hence, the WC 24 hrs after dosing.

I've heard it normally keeps the stuff away for a couple of months - is that right?
Very excited as I'm going to be decorating the tank with a bunch of slate I've ordered.

Meh. I'm no expert. Would have done it anyway as puffers seem to like crevices to hide in. Slate is cheap and affords plenty

LR is better!

+1 billion to the lr. If you want to tailor the environment more you can get some cheap dry rock for filler. Bust it apart with a hammer and epoxy it together along with some lr.

want live rock but (at the risk of rustling feather I must be honest) I'd feel bad about it if it's shipped from depleting reefs for something not essential. One of my many projects which I've thought about and then trash-canned is artificial LR and using a little frag to seed it but looking further into it I reckon that it's easy to do but takes some time and fiddling to do RIGHT (in a way that is safe and will last). To my disbelief, I couldn't find an place to buy reasonably priced artificial LR which also makes me question how safe the DIY methods are - If it's so cheap and simple, why isn't anyone seizing the market for it?

I do get that but you can retrieve LR from established systems to seed dead rock in your tank.

I have about 10 pounds of dry rock that has been in with about 40 to 50 pounds for around a year. There are some bristle worms in it but not a lot more.
