ihave a figure 8 puffer that is a bout two and a half inches. I came out this morning and he had jumped out of his 46 gallon tank. I went to pick him up for the trash and he moved, realizing he was still alive I quickly got him back into the tank and gently got any debris off of him. he is now, 8 hours later, in a breeding net in thhe same tank. He's barely alive and semi floating. I don't know what to do. Please advise.

In such a situation you can only hope for the best. Hope he recovers from his shock.

I read that he possibly puffed and isn't able to expel the air. They suggested holding him nose up in the water and gently rocking him back and forth. I didn't think he had puffed since he's not any fatter than usual. Could the floating be a red flag for him being puffed?

Poor thing! There is an article here about puffing:

I'm sorry you couldn't save him... Whenever this happens, it's always good to gently swish the fish back & forth under water to get water over it's gills. It may have just been out of the water too long...
Puffers are very good jumpers & it's important to keep a good lid over their tank.
