The Puffer Forum

.... a Pee Wee puffer. It is a saltwater puffer that is swimming around a saltwater community tank that is even housed with peppermint shrimp, star fish, etc. It has the body shape of a porc, but is only about the size of a quarter. It has spots and a blue-line does it's side. It is whitish in color. They say it only gets about an inch or 2 but they didn't know a scientific name for it and I have no way of posting a pic. Any ideas?

Just a guess, but it could be some sort of box/cow fish.

If you are thinking of a Valentini, PP, nope! Never seen one of these before, but I am not extremely knowledgeable when it comes to saltwater puffers. They are holding one for me until Thurs. My saltwater tank is the one I am wanting to keep, out of the 2 I have left, but I want to do more research on him before I get him, so I may end up passing on him. I don't want to purchase him and he end up growing 12"+ due to misinformation by the LFS.

Well, this turned out to be upsetting. It is horrible for a business to A) Sell a fish it knows nothing about just to get a sell, by telling their customers the fish only gets 1 or 2", or, B) Lying to customers to get a sell.

This fish turns out to be a Narrow-Lined puffer of which I will post a pic soon. It gets 31 to 50 cm. That is a FAR cry from 1 to 2"

I wonder how many poor puffs will be gotten rid of because of some jerk LFS's poor ownership/mismanagement. They had a whole tank of these of which they sold every one of them by telling their customers lies about their adult sizes. I will do the best I can to care for this fish now because I cannot say no to that cute little face. He is the beggingest/hungriest puff I have ever had and has the most interactive/friendly personality as well. He is currently an inch long(including the tail). I have fallen in love all over again:-)
When, oh when, will I ever learn to stay out of fish stores. I just can't resist the puffs. I tried sending my dad to look at him, and couldn't even resist that way, lol. Is there a puffers anonymous?

BTW, I did get a kick outta this puff, it truly endeared me to him after being misinformed. Right before I bought him, the owner was complaining about him eating a cleaner shrimp worth twice as much as him, hehe. Why was there a $30 shrimp in there with a puff, lol?

Sounds like they are really dumb at ur LFS....

be sure and tell the person at the LFS what the fish is. I have been to a few fish stores that have no idea about pufers. this might just be lack of info. And if not at least the person will know that they cant dope you into another fish.

Sacramento has the worst lfs's ever, anyone from sac here go to any fish store and you will see every fish in every tank flicking on rocks because they are all infested with ich
