How difficult is it to build a decent fish tank?
I'm thinking of a 1 metre cubed acrylic aquarium

Not overly difficult but you need to have a workspace and a few basic tools. Depening on your area the hardest part may be finding an acylic supply. You want to use cell cast only. There are calculators online that can give you the thicknes required and will calculate out the sheets that you need. Have the place cut your sheets for you if they will and make sure to triple check the cuts before you pay for them. Additional item needed will be weldon acrylic cement, #4 I believe, and a couple needle applicators. Try to get some scrap peices at the supplier so you can practice with the cement.

To add to the above. Note that acrylic is extremely prone to scratching.
