Puffer anatomy

So I have done alot of searches for puffer anatomy and have not found any reference to these. I am curios as to what the protrusions between the eyes are. I have seen them on alot of different breeds. Does anyone know what these are called and if they serve a purpose other than making these guys even cuter?

They are antenna for brainwashing humans into giving them more food, have you not noticed how when they stare at you you instinctively give them more food? lol I haven't a clue but sure someone knows

Do you mean the little nub like things where the nostrils are, or would be? I always just assumed that they were part of the nose/nostril hole to help them smell. Maybe some one can correct me?

Yes those are what im reffering to. So possibly an external appendage to thier nose.

The appendages are external taste/smell devices. Air breathers can use nostrils to detect scents/aromas in air. Fish generally do not (intentionally) breathe air except for a few special exceptions. Fish in general have external taste buds to track food items. There is a variety of styles to these anatomic parts and they can be part of the fish's identification.
But I like Bertie's explanation also...older anatomic part can take on new functions. No one has located any functional ESP organs as yet. We can dream that these are their power modules.
