So help me out here..

I cant decide on a tank.. I have it narrowed down to 2 different tanks

I am eventually looking for a showtank style for the living room.
But until then these are my choices.

1st one is a 105g Rimless from 48 X 24 X 18


Second one is a custom 2yr old used tank , 190g (72 X 36 x 18.5) that has spent more time empty than filled.
Guy broke up with his girlfriend moved and its been sitting in his dinning room for the last 8 months.
Went and saw it last night and filled it with water no issues.

The white stuff is the sand from when it was setup.
It was made by Glass Cages and I have heard good and bad things about them just like any company.

So the question becomes go new? Or go Used.
I am fighting a space issue where we are going to set the tank up but I think I can work that out.
I am going to be getting a porcupine puffer for sure FOWLR tank.

Since it has the turn around room in the 105 I am leaning towards that direction because its new.
Once I move into my new house in a year or so I am looking at building an in wall setup that would be around 300g
Then i could turn the DSA tank into a reef tank..

One of my concerns is the height of the larger tank 18.5"
I have it in my head that porcs like to swim vertical not around a bunch.
Am I wrong?

I like the used one! I buy used ones all the time and I don't have any issues other than cleaning. I think in general puffers prefer length over width as long as the width is adequate for them to turn around.

What are you putting in it?

The Porcupine i am going to have ordered in will be around 3" Caribbean Porcupine Puffer they are the yellow, lighter color ones if I am not mistaken

Both tanks offer adequate turning ability.

Everything is going to based around the Puffer.

So honestly not sure. Still kind of doing research. Probably a Wrasse of some sort and a flame angel maybe some tangs

Puffers will jump out of both those tanks. So will wrasses.

Sorry I forgot to mention with both tank I will have glass tops made.
Kind of like the ones that come with the JBJ Rimless tanks seen here

I prefer the second; both mine are used, and are just fine. And it would give your puff more footprint to swim in

I would go for the bigger one to

I would go for the one that you think will look nicer in your house and suit the decor best - it'll be with you for a long time so you don't want to have any regrets in 5 years time.

So the one thing I didn't realize was how wide the base of the stand was for the 190g
I would have to build a custom stand in my house because of the doorway angels in my current home.

I might go back to the drawing board and keep searching.

Personally I'd go for the bigger used tank.

Pufferghoti has nmade basic tank stands in the past for various tanks we have had, and it doesn't take a lot of effort even for some-one who is an amateur at building anything more complicated than an Ikea bookshelf.

I'm sure there are plenty of youtube ids to give you an idea if you decide to go that way..

We use egg-crate on several of our tanks to stop puffers and others jumping out.

Eggcrate is the fish-keepers friend. At least this fish-keeper...

I wasn't keen on egg-crate until the trigger-fish smacked me in the face by leaping out of the tank. I'm still not sure who was most surprised..me to see a fish hit me in the face and fall to the ground and the fish gasping for breath on the floor..

Thankfully I didn't have to explain a large red mark on my face to any-one...
