I'm looking for a summer project for me and my daughter. I would like to build a 75g tank. Is the cost of building one any different than just purchasing one? Also if you guys have done this in the past and have any easy 75g designs that you could share with me I'd appreciate it.

I don't know much about building tanks although it probably would be cheaper to build one. Good luck to you and your daughter.

I'm looking into canopy's for my tank. Instead of building a tank, why not buy the tank, and build the canopy/stand for it with your daughter? Here is a link on reefcentral I found. Your stand/canopy doesn't have to be this ornate...if you search, lots of people DIY stands/canopy's..:

Lets just say, tempered glass isnt cheap. I think you'd be best to find a local forum for fish tanks (be it salwater, fresh, planted, reef, etc) and watch the sale forums. We have picked up many tanks really cheaply this way, even got a 75 for free because someone was throwing it out. Just takes time and patience.
I thought about building my own tank(s) until I priced out glass. We bought glass for my girlfriend's bearded dragon's cage, and two 1/4"x19x27 tempered was nearly $70. She did have a hole drilled in it but they told us that was only $3 per piece of glass, so the cost was just over $60. I'd tend to think you'd want to go thicker than 1/4" on a 75, and you're definately going to need more glass than that. I dont know what they go for new, as I never consider buying them new due to the costs. :p
