Is my fish tank too small for my puffer?

I have a 3 inch spiny box puffer ( and hes a fatty ) in a 50 gallon tank right now and he is alone, I don't plan to add other fish in with him. Is the 50 gallon enough for just him or should i invest in a 75 ( I will if I must but money is rather tight. ) He seems pretty content and I've only had him for one day and he is eating.

55g is fine for now. Eventually, your fish will grow over a foot. If kept as a singleton a 75 should suffice but look into a 90g. Lots of used systems out there.

PP- the tank is a 50, which is better proportioned anyway and close to the same working volume. But I agree that a 75 would be a lot better. I would also suggest moving up ASAP, as I do not believe in "moving fish up in tank size as they need it". IME, that is a great way to stunt fish. But I am a grumpy old man about such things.
