I currently breed and raise ramshorn snails to feed to my GSP. I'd like to raise or breed freshwater clams or mussels for the same purpose. Does anyone have any experience doing this?

From what I heard from someone who did a lot of research on this they are hard to keep alive... I"m assuming that if they are hard to keep alive they must be close to impossible to breed... but I could be wrong, I did not do any research on this myself... this will be interesting to read

To be honest it would be unlikely to be productive, especially when snails are so easy to breed. Feed your snails a good varied diet and your puffer will reap the rewards of what the snails have eaten

I buy them frozen in 2lb bags from the local produce store.

Thank you. My snails get algae wafers, fish food flakes, brine shrimp (yes, they eat those), shrimp pellets, green beans and leaf lettuce. I was just hoping for another way to raise food for my puffer.

I do agree that shellfish are too demanding for home culture. They are on the other hand quite reasonably priced in local stores and in grocery chains with decent fish departments for people food.

Start looking up the asian food markets. Those places are a gold mine for puffer food.
