I plan on setting up a brackish tank for a figure eight puffer, I'm thinking about 15 gals. Problem is, I don't know what filter I really want to get. Does anyone have any recommendations of (specific) filters? Stores to get them from? (We have a pet supplies plus, pet smart, and petco near us, along with two LFSs called Aquarium Adventures and Jack's Aquarium, but I'm never afraid to shop online)

+1 Can't go wrong with AquaClears when it comes to HOB filters.

If you have the room I would strongly recommennd a 29g. Check out CraigsList...There's always several whole setups on there for cheap. A larger tank is truely easier in the long run and way more enjoyable to watch.

+1 to all the folks suggesting selecting a larger-than-minimum tank size. Larger tanks are more easily managed and maintained with a built-in margin of safety.

Filter format is very much a personal choice - I'm with bertie - I'm a canister person and use Eheims by preference. But the fomat you select shound be what you are most comfortable with maintaining. Puffers tend to be long-lived fish, this is not just a set-up for a year or two, but for a decade or two, so make sure you are comfortable with it and that it will suit the fish as well for a long time.

Okay! Would a 20 gal make a big difference? My LFS is doing Black Friday and they have twenty gals for twenty dollars off...

Yes, more dilution & better footprint for swimming across the tank.
