GSP Death

Hey Guys,
I haven't posted in awhile but I just wanted to let some steam off to some people that may understand how upset I am that my GSP died tonight.
I'll give you a little background, I've had him for 5 years in a 30g tank by himself. On tuesday he was sitting on the bottom of the tank looking very dark so I checked the water and the Nitrates were very high (80-100ppm) I think this may have been caused by rotting food lodged in one of the decorative plants.
I performed a 75% water change tuesday, wednesday, and tonight bringing the nitrates to ~10ppm however shortly after completing the water change tonight he went belly up on the surface quite suddenly, he thrashed around the tank for about ten minutes and then settled down and stopped breathing, I'm confident that he is now passed.
I feel TERRIBLE, a combination of guilt that I could have done something more / neglected cleaning the tank and also because I've lost a little fish that has been great company for me for a long time.
I don't really need an explanation as its obviously too late now, altough I'm not opposed to hearing your opinions on what happened. I'm mainly just looking for a bit of support. I'm actually surprised at how upsetting this is.
Thanks.
