The Puffer Forum

Hi all,

I recently purchased my first puffer from my LFS. He's about 3 inches long, and his name is Puff Daddy (i know not super original) Anyways had him in a QT tank for about 2 weeks, everything is great so far he's been in my main tank (90 gallon) for about three days. What are some pitfalls that I should watch out for and how often should I feed him? I know i should have done more research before purchasing, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I typically feed him 3-4 krill shrimp daily, and have no idea if this is too little or too much. I have started doing water changes more frequently since becoming a member of this site, and started paying much more attention to my water parameters. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum. What type of puffer do you have? Drop the krill with immediate effect as it is linked to lockjaw in puffers which can be fatal. Many other foods out there don't take the risk

I have a stars and stripes puffer, i will drop krill immediately. Thanks for the heads up, what do you recommend and how often should i feed?

I have read the feeding articles in the library but I am still a bit confused about what to feed my Stars and Stripes puffer. I do not havea LFS nearby, and realize that krill and silversides are no good for my puffer. is their something i can buy at a grocery store that i could feed him? i am assuming frozen shrimp are no good due to preservatives? please help! The article was very informative, but did not focus on specifically marine puffers. can i feed my marine puffer the same thing as a freshwater puffer? ie. bloodworms, worms and such? thanks for your help

Worms an bloodworms are good. You can feed any uncooked and unseasoned sea foods from grocery stores

thanks bertie for your quick response, ive been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what to feed the little guy. so i can buy a bag of uncooked frozen shelled shrimp from the grocery store and im good? same thing with mussels on ice?

Absolutely, just remember proper crunchy foods are also essential on a regular basis. You can buy in bulk and freeze to make sure there are no lingering parasites etc, just thaw before feeding
