I have a 55 gal freshwater tank with three gsp's. One of them had babies then ate most of them. One hatched and shortly after the mother ate it too. I don't understand how she successfully bred since most forums I read say its impossible for the to breed in captivity let alone freshwater. I've had the mother puffer (Lol)for over a year now.

+1^ if this is true, you have succeeded where many great scientists and hobbyists have failed. But I have my doubts, you sure it wasn't the fry of another fish?

Are you for certain these are Green Spotted Puffers? For what I know the only puffers known to be bred in home aquariums are freshwater species such as the Dwarf Puffer. Please check out the list of puffer species here in the puffer library.

And GSP's are better off in High Brackish to Marine conditions. Freshwater will shorten their lives.

Use imgur.com to host the pics.
Nobody should except pics in case of shenanigans. And my shenanigans senses are tingling.
Haha, not sure what "except" means...I've been having some real brain farts lately. Accept

I will post the pics tomorrow guys and you can decide for yourself, I'm not trying to male anyone believe I'm just curious about how it happened. I have a 55 gal tank with three gsp's and one algae eater so unless the algae eater has been pregnant for a year it was a baby gsp.

They are not livebearers, so you would have seen eggs for quite some time. Also, studies found that they need marine water to breed, to fertilize eggs, because the sperm ist not working in brackish or freshwater.
So I do have my doubts and would like to see pics, too.

@ Corvus Thats why I was suspecting it could be a freshwater species that can be confused with a GSP in appearance. (or was simply mislabeled as that species at the LFS where the OP originally bought them from) Perhaps an Abei, Fangs, Brown, or Dwarf Puffer since they also have spots?
@OP Please understand we are merely intrigued by your recent developments and wish to understand and make sense of this as much as you do. Do not think we are accusing you of lying or making up a "fish story".
