The Puffer Forum

Hello, new to this forum and hope to expand on my dp/puffer fish knowledge. I asked a question of this forum yesterday and was told that perhaps a betta would be a better wet pet for me! Well that"s a unique way to keep the membership #'s down! I am not new to tropical fish, have had at least one tank going since 1973.
Due to the lease on my apt, I can't have a tank over 10 gallons, just gotta make due.

10 gal. has been home for over 2 yrs
one male DP
two ottos ( male & female )
four amano shrimp ( 3 females & 1 male )
and as of yesterday I didn't think the tank was overstocked, I knew I was maxed. The tank will remain at the present stocking level until old mother nature steps in.

please be kind, no harsh comments, words can and do hurt.

Don't mind RTR, he can get crotchety at times but is a wonderful person to have around for his knowledge of puffers. He's been keeping them for close to 60 years!

And he is a grumpy old man who will not do it at all if he cannot do it right. Overcrowded tanks are not doing it right. Your tank as described in your original thread is very seriously overstocked and inappropriately stocked. Your lease restrictions preclude your operating a tank sufficient for the stock presently crammed into it. It would not be good advice to say otherwise. Puffers are members of an odd-ball family which happens to be rather demanding on both space and water conditions. Under good conditions they are relatively long-lived high personality fish. Under poor conditions they are neither of those things. DPs are one of the few puffers which can be captive bred with some ease, which I have done, but not in 10-gallon tanks. Puffers need space, even the smallest of them.

Thank you taking the time and effort to welcome me, but I feel that at this time I am still to fragile to put myself up for this. I am a survivor of a brutal crime, and was left for dead. My doctor has been encouraging to step a bit outside my comfort zone, and join a hobby forum. Clearly I"m not ready for any sort of berating.

Stick around, it's a great forum. Sorry to hear that you are having a hard time, sometimes words on forums seem harsh but the best possible advice is available right here on this forum. It is just advise so if your tank is working and you are happy stick with it and hang around. You will see how great this community is in time, of course negative comments will be seen on a regular basis but that is the nature of a forum.

I agree--we are a family-friendly forum with folks from all walks of life. You have to take the good with the bad on any forum. Read some of the info in our Library here, even RTR's articles!
