Why do people...

Why do people say, "I have 4 goldfish and a couple of algae eaters in my 20 gallon for 6 years"...when I say "gold fish need ponds" and "small tanks stunt fish".

How is that possible for those fish to live like that? It has got to be BS! I imagine old tank syndrome helps..but for years?

Why do people say, "just let your tank sit a few days and then your good"...when I say "You need to cycle your tank".

And..why are people so proud to show off stupid looking tanks? Disco gravel (no offence Filbert, your gravel is cute)....one stupid plastic plant...and the ever popular treasure box bubbler :mcfly:

What drives these people? What about this hobby makes them think that treating a live creature this way is ok? Why do they INSIST that they are doing everything right...no matter how much proof you can provide. I can provide link after link and they won't read it! And you KNOW they don't read it cause if they did they would know what the dang nitrogen cycle was instead of saying, "I don't know what you mean by cycle"....Didn't I just post a link?

I think the only solution to the existence of these people on the internet is to put RTR in charge of the internet. If someone says too many stupid things about fish keeping or boastfully posts a picture of a half-filled, under decorated, uber tacky fish tank with the poor little fish hovering in the corner...RTR takes away their computer privileges and makes them sit in the corner :badboy:

I know we were ALL noobs once...but the minute someone said I was doing something stupid...I read the links they gave then changed my ways.

Ok rant over...just had to get that out :soapbox:

Oh, I forgot to add...Why do people think that PH is that big of a deal.."My fish is lying on his side"..."check your ph".."my fish is gasping for air".."check your ph".."my fish keep dying".."check your ph"

The first part is all ignorance. It is akay to be ignorant, we all are. I can accept ignorant fish keepers who get their knowledge fron ignorant store clerks. I mean the clerk is a professional so he/she should be knowledgable in what they sell, righ? Now what I can't stand are people who actually take the time to internet info but only pick and choose what to practice because it satisfies their wants over the fish's needs. Or get exactly the same correct advice from many peolple on a forum yet still chooses to do it their way because it's what they want to do. Look at my sig. This is how I ended a rant on another forum to a member who after a squad of people advised him and he totally shrugged it all off. I want to say it involved 20 fish in a 10g with like four green cories. I singled out how big those cories get as an exmple and even after I posted a video on what a full grown looks like, he just shrugged it off. If you go to a forum for help, accept that help.

And 7.0 PH is always brought up because of the fish products industry...There are products to be sold. What's sad is PH swings those products cause do nothing but kill fish. Hmm, I guess I better go buy more fish.

I also get a little mad at people who go to a forum and treat the members there like Google. Too may times another noob asks the same question that was answered in detail two posts below. I mean maybe if you did a little searching for yourself you would learn a few other things too along the way. I don't know how some of you around here do it. Answering the same questions over and over. I do notice sometimes when a noob comes in with a question and one of our members answer it, everyone else kind sits back and lets that member do the "mentoring" unless something was missed or over looked.

Now you got me ranting. LOL

Some people don't like to be told if told harshly and will fight back until they have time to see the error of their ways (I have this flaw). Others just simply won't listen and won't see the error of their ways.

PH can be important though. A neon tetra shouldn't be kept in alkaline water much like a Mollie shouldn't be kept in acid water.

"Help me! Something is wrong with my fish!".............."Wait. What? Something I am doing is causing the problem?"........"No way, something is wrong with the fish! Nothing is wrong with the way I do things!"....."What do you mean by "overstocked" and what is ammonia poisoning?"......."No I didn't read the information on the link you posted"..."I don't need that information because I am already doing everything correctly. I know I am doing everything right because my brother's friend's cousin knows a lot about fish"......"Ok so nobody knows what's wrong with the fish? I need help with the fish not help with anything I am doing!"......"What is a water change?"

I loved my skeleton bubbling treasure box.

Ph is pretty important, I dont think cichlids would enjoy ro water too much.

LOL, I didn't mean that it is never important...it is just that when someone asks for help a bunch of noobs jumps up and says "check your ph"....when the more obvious questions are ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels.

In a fish emergency..knowing the ph and nothing else is like saying, "I have a red car, can you tell me what is wrong with it?"

Sadly I'm not in an area where I can keep goldfish in a pond all year round..unless I have a really deep pond which isn't good round children.

At least you know and admit goldfish don't belong in 10 gallon tanks. I don't mind goldfish being in tanks as long as they are at least in tanks that are big enough for them to swim in.

If fish keepers could do an animal abuse commercial, like those for cats and dogs....the commercial would be full of pictures of bettas with dropsy and gold fish with swim bladder disorders.

As long as we are venting, I know I am still basically a lab rat such that it bugs me see "PH, "Ph", "ph"... The symbol is and always was pH. I do realize that most folks are rather careless on the internet, but communication is not really helped by text message level of communication. I happen to be visually handicapped, and the farther an inquiry or response gets away from a normal printed message, the more difficulty I have translating it into coherent thoughts. "Train of consciousness" messages push me to ship on to the next thread, as I likely will not be able to understand the message as written. But that is my own issue, and also a generational thing.

The pH can be the easiest indicator of water issues, but only if the source water pH is included. I cannot remember seeing both ever given in initial inquiries. It all really needs to be accompanies by a complete list of additives used in the tank in the last months, but that never happens either. Plus, a "normal" pH can be read from a terribly bad water condition tank.

FYI: There are multiple Cichlids from the same waters as neons/cardinals.

FYI: There are mollies in relatively soft water in the wild, but pure strains have all disappeared from the hobby generations ago.

FWIW...

I am so guilty of this one! Nitrates! :D

As far as pH goes...my kindle automatically corrects pH with oh...and sometimes BH. So when I go to correct it ends up funky...So I just let it go.

I don't like any colored gravel, unless it was like black or white or a combo of both and I always wanted a bubbling thing in my aquarium lol... now I want to go buy a treasure chest for my dps XD

I prefer natural colored brown gravel. But blue, white, and black is ok. Air stones or curtains can be quite stunning if properly placed and matched with good lighting. Some even have lights built into them now.
