I've given up trying to get my digital camera back from our teenage daughter. Having asked if I can use it a few times, there is now a sign on her bedroom door stating 'NO MEN ALLOWED', pre-empting my urge to go and rifle about looking for it whilst she's at school.

So... a camera that is good at taking pictures of fish. Don't really want to spend more than £250 (that's about $350 - $400)

This is the best place to ask, since you all understand what's needed, rather than ask in a camera shop and be told a load of sales rubbish.

I'm pretty happy with my Cannon G10 (comes in G11 now) but it's a point & shoot. Best camera for pics of fish are a DSL but I can't afford that. I am an underwater photographer & have taken a few good fish pics but corals are much more cooperative!

Just looking on Amazon (UK) and those are about my price range second hand - what are your thoughts on buying a second hand camera? It does seem you get ALOT more for your money than what is offered as new for my price range.

That second pic, there was one of those in our LFS labelled as a 'Scribbled Puffer', it was curled up in a ball looking a bit sorry for itself - if I had a SW tank set up, I'd have re-homed it in a flash (hhmmm... 100 gallon in the garage keeps crying out to be in use again)

That 2nd pic is of a juvie boxfish.

I think I've convinced Wendy on the camera, so long as I can find a 'refurbished' second hand one with a warranty, in case the lens is damaged.

I've got a Nikon DSLR as does my partner. Mine was used and came with a warranty. From a reputable source I wouldn't have an issue with buying a used camera

I got a Canon 500d (Rebel T1i in the US Market) for $250. Got a 50mm Prime for $80 extra. They often run that low in price on Amazon and sometimes eBay.
(And yes that is in USD)

New ones are pretty affordable.

We're going to hop on a ferry to the mainland at the weekend and have a look at these in a camera shop as Wendy wants to make sure they are easy to use, rather than trust me to just go ahead and buy what seems best - I fell for it, she gets to go around the shopping mall with me trapesing along behind like a lost sheep carrying all the bags

Im in the US and I went on amazon and just searched for Rebel. Nothing comes up as a DSL. Most of them say RSL. What is the cheapest Rebel camera I could get that would take good pictures of fish? Like the ones above. Would I need a lense to put on it? I know nothing about camera terminology.
