GSP color changes

Hi all, i tried searching but couldnt find an answer for what i wanna ask. I know they get darker when they are kept in bad conditions, or they are hunting. but do they change color depending on their surroundings? i have recently changed from sand substrate to very small gravel because water was always muddy, and puffers seem a lot darker since then. when im feeding them, or they just swim around the tank they are nice green with almost white stomach, but when they rest they become almost whole dark grey. didnt notice this when they had sand in there. thank you

+1 to PP's comments.

When resting/sleeping/etc. it is a survival trait to blend into the background.
