Hello all,
I just found this site and I am very happy to join and hear from other Puffer fish friends.
I have had puffers for over twenty yrs. My first puffer was an Avacado puffer which I had for about 6yrs. I miss this puffer but she bit me every time I worked in the tank.
I have had a Fahaka puffer for over 8 years and was growing extremely large at almost 9". Unfortunately, I lost this puffer when I moved from one house to another in the winter time. (long story) Lost a few other fish too.
I now have a Red Eye who is about 3" and completely round.
A 4" Fahaka who is not the most friendly of fish but I keep her busy with fast moving tank mates that she will never catch and is starting to give up trying.
My favorite is my 6" Mbu puffer. Friendly, animated, and peaceful would best describe her.
I have a 55gal tank set up with crays, clams and snails to keep all my puffers happy and they are all in well planted, over filtered, and populated tanks.
I have heard by everyone that puffers should be housed alone but that is not what I have experienced. Just use your head when selecting tankmates of course. I have never lost a fish to one of my puffers yet.

Hi and welcome. That fahaka didn't sound very big for its age, what size tank was he in? Hope you are prepared to empty your pockets on the mbu, a tank in the region of about 1000g will be required to keep him comfy. He will cost you a bomb lol.

You are keeping a red eye, fahaka & mbu, along with other fish, all in a 55g???

Hi and welcome! Sounds like you've got quite the setups going, especially with a 55g devoted to puffer food

I understood it as the 55 is just for the puffers food. No mention of the size of tanks the puffers are in.

Haha, oh yeah.

I didn't even relate those two lines to one another.

Definitely see how that would really be cause for concern.

So many things to address...
My original Fahaka was in a 90gal where she lived with a snakehead(no longer legal), an Avacado puffer, a Manaquense, a Plecko, and a wolf fish. I lost them all in my move.
My Mbu is in a 200gal and doing fine. Yes she is still small and plenty of time before she outgrows it.
My red eye is in a 75 gal and my Fahaka is in a 125.
Yes the 55 is dedicated to raising food only. I have a few killifish in there for housekeeping.
