How long can a worm live underwater?

I have gotten my fangs off feeders with worms (earthworms), not sure of the species as the are from my yard.

The puffer won't let me see him eat, but I know he eats them because one minute they are there, 10 seconds later they are not.

However, his last worm was especially agile and was able to stay away from the puffer for hours. I tried picking him up and placing him in front of the puffer, but the worm got away.

I am wondering how long a worm can stay alive under water. I am worried about my water quality. I am sure a dead worm could send ammonia soaring.

This last worm stayed alive for several hours. I was worried it was gonna die so I kept checking the tank every few minutes, which the puffer did not appreciate.

I tried googling this and got various times, from 1 hour to days.

I've found worms alive in the substrate days later.

Ok, so it is not something I need to worry about. I can just put the worm in and walk away, fangs will eventually get it, probably before it dies.

Thanks!

Red wriggler worms would die after an hour. Those worms never buried into my sand, so its a big plus.

I have to share what happened to me today with a red wiggler worm. I tossed one in and my GSP somehow missed it. It floated right into the polyp of a large button polyp I have. It quickly closed up on it, and never did open. I just got back from a movie, and from what I can tell, I believe the button is now open . . . and no worm. Who knew, it would eat a worm. Has this happened to anyone? I never like to see anything "suffer" and I sure felt for that poor worm. A quick gobble by my GSP would have been better :)

I feed all my polyps with a mouth. Mainly live blackworms.

I suspect that the submerse lifespan of earthworm varies with 1) the species and 2) the O2 level in the tank. Live blackworms can live indefinitely in FW tanks with high O2 levels, but not in high/dense populations. numbers

How interesting. Never knew :o Does one polyp feed the entire structure, or just itself?
