Couple of suggestions: That black sand is going to keep him looking very dark.
Also, I'd reduce the depth to 1/2". They are not a burrowing species & at the depth it's at now, you'll have to thoroughly stir every inch of sand, even under all that decor.

Love it, PC! I'll have you know that I made a fool of myself peering in every dark tank corner at the LFS this afternoon. Didn't find a Fangs, but I DID get funny looks from the employees...

Fangs is pretty common puffer in my area. Throw in some live shrimps and see their hunting skills

I stared at my lfs f8 and gsp tank crossing my fingers..no luck.. Althougjt they did have 2 stars and stripes, one porcupine, and one white Puffer with black horizontal lines I cOuldnt identify in the SW side

Caught him sleeping in the plants, near the filter, against the glass. If anyone else has one of these puffers...definitely lots of plants (fake or real) is the way to go...He hasn't even went near the cave for days.




@pufferpunk, I always put too much substrate in, I guess I don't calculate properly. I will probably take out a few cups on that one side. He does lighten up some even on the dark sand. After he settles in, if he does not lighten up all the way I can add in some white sand, but I love the black. For the new f8 I chose light sand for that reason...which sucks because I have to take out all the black gravel in that tank. And that is going to be fun because there are tons of baby snails in there. I feel like I have been aquascaping all week!

Thanks everyone for the compliments, I worked hard on this tank. I completely redid it to accommodate the lurker. Also, I felt really bad for him being at that pet store for a year in that bare bottom tank. I wanted him to really love it.

I tend to use too much substrate also, and then get higher nitrate reading than I should have. Then I end up taking half or more of it out and the tank settles down to easier care - unless I have issues with the artificial plants not being securely positioned in the thinner substrate. I also like black sand/gravel, especially with somewhat inactive or retiring fish. Due to such issues, none of my current tanks have substrate that dark (all of my black is clean and stored away in bags).

If you find a good technique for keeping artificials in place with thin substrate, please share...

some super glue and something small and heavy to attach the fake plant onto . Most LFS here have a fair collection of pebbles/smooth rocks that can be used for that.

All the plants have those rock bases, which helps, but they still come undone during water changes. Fortunately I love my fake plants so it is worth the effort. After looking at the tank, most of the thick sand is on the cave side, so I'll get it out on the next water change. I wish I could glue the plants to the tank itself, but most glues are toxic or washable.
