HEY THERE

Me and my girlfriend are about to get our first fish tank together and have chosen Green Spotted Puffers to keep in a Juwel Lido 120 as their home.....

Ive had tropical fish all my life so know how to look after them ..... But never kept puffers so fancy something different now....

2 Questions I have are as follows.......... Will two green spotted puffers be ok in 120 liters (27 gallons) of water once they reach adulthood?

And will 2 Bumble Bee Goby's make happy tank mates? .....

I am interested to hear everyones opinion on this but more interested in hearing from other people who may already have bumble bees with their puffers, as ive read so many mixed reports on google about green spotted puffers and tank mates being bad etc, but most people seam to just give their 'opinions' rather than their 'actual' experiences with these fish together...

Well to start with 27 gallons really isn't enough for a singal adult GSP.

Second, BBGs and GSPs have different needs regarding salinity, low end brackish (1.005) to high end brackish/marine (1.017+) respectively.

I have kept BBGs with an F8 puffer and had good luck with my docile adult who ate without hurry. The BBGs got plenty. But when I added another older juvi F8 who was a hurry up and get all the food before anyone else, things got more difficult. This made my old guy compete for food too, so I removed the 10 little BBGs for feeding issues as well as I was afraid they would get hurt over food. This was in a 55g so there was plenty of room compared to a 27g.

Just last night I removed the juvi/fast eater from the tank. He had been in there for at least six months and they got along fine but I didn't like all the compitition for food and it became too tiresome to make sure he didn't over-eat. He is also entering adulthood and I think he was gonna be a nipper. I just added four molly girls and he tasted the first beautiful lyertail tailfin right after she was released. And he kept eyeing them a week later in a way that made me nervious. My older adult has never shown a glance of evil and he is a total sweetheart. My point is you never know about their personality and it is comman knowledge that GSPs have a tendency to be meaner.

If I were you, and if you are sold on keeping the 27g, I would get a singal F8 puffer and 5 or so BBGs. Instead of BBGs you could do a femal molly or two. If you are sold on GSPs, one might work in a 27g with extra maintenace or you'll need a larger tank.

BBGs would make a nice snack for a GSP!

You could also do 2 F8 puffers nicely in 28 gallons (no tank mates though) or a lovely gaggle of dwarf puffers. Puffers need lots of decor to keep them busy, which displaces a fair amount of water. Too small for a GSP, I'm afraid.

Yup, once you factor in displacement for a correctly decorated puffer home you will be left with approx 20g, gsp require 30g min for an adult. Why not go for a f8 and a couple of bbg's? They both have the same water requirements. Where are you from? Welcome to the forum

Bumblebees and GSP don't go together. The recommended salinity levels for each of them differ.

BBG and F8... yes. BBG and GSP? Sorry no way lol.

Thank you all very much for your fast replies to my question ..... We are kinda disapointed to hear that in a 27 gallon tank, 1 GSP will be pretty much it .... The guy at shirley aquatics told us 5 would be fine!! .... Shows how much they know about puffers!! .....

We are now looking into figure 8 puffers but havnt seen any at any aquarium shops near us yet......

Just out of interest, do GS puffers tend to prefer being alone?.....

Actually, 27g won't even hold 1 adult GSP. Imagine a Nerf football trying to get around a heavily decorated tank that size. Perfect for a single F8 & a few BBGs though. You could try 2 F8s but you do run the chance of the dominant one constantly bullying the other one.
