I have been slowly raising my salinity to brakish, only raising it by .001 each day. My puffers eating habits have been great, eating two small portions a day. This time I waited two days because I wanted to make sure the salinity wasnt going to go higher than I wanted it. So today I steadily raised it from 1.011 to 1.012 via small tube into the filter. I started raising it this morning before I fed him, after I raised the salinity I tried to feed him and he was not intersted at all. He hasnt eaten all day. His color looks great, no signs of stress what so ever. Should I be concerned that he will not eat?

You are raising the SG too fast. No more then .002/week or you'll destroy the bacterial bed. Check your parameters.

nitrate 40, nitrite .5, Alk. 300, PH 8.4. Doesnt look bad right now.

Just slow down on the salinity and you should be okay then. He probably just got shocked and or you are killing your bacteria.

In my opinion, any nitrite is always bad. I had a small spike in that, and wondered why my puffer was hiding at the bottom. Sure enough, tested the water and found that. I'd do a large water change now. Even 40ppm of nitrates is too high

I agree--lots of WC, lowering the SG & getting the toxins outta there.

+1. Get him sorted first and get rid of the nitrite then worry about the sg of the tank.
