Anyone have experience before? I have had internal pumps and powerhead doing that before as they are physically in the water and are relatively easy to rectify.. Canister, do they do that as well? If yes, dismantle the whole thing to check?

External canisters are topographically "in" the water, exactly as are "internal" pumps.

That said, I have never had an electrically "leaky" external canister, but most of my experience is with one brand (Eheim) so I can't say much about most other brands.

hmm.. For me, Eheim are super costly(and for good reasons).. at least 2-3 times the price of the one I am using now.. Tmr I am just going to dismantle the whole thing to have a look inside.. Worst case I would just switch it off and use a additional internal pump to get the water going instead.. Btw from what I have read, the fishes wouldnt feel that right? at least for the short term till I sort things out.

I have Eheims over 30 years old. Worth the cost.

+1 to PP's comment. Eheims are forever. They just keep pumping. I used to try other brands, but gave it up... why waste time and money of things that do not last?

I am glad I made the right choice in return pump for the new 142G aquarium then, an eheim pump.

I do have and use Eheim pumps as well as canisters. They are quiet, efficient, and reliable. There are some other brand which are more efficient, but may not be quite as lasting.

Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired though. Good thing their stuff doesn't brake much.

Meh I'd get an eheim, but I can only afford 2nd hand fluvals for the time being. Next time I get a filter, I'll think I'll try an eheim and buy a brand new one. Anyone using eheims recommend a specific model/line?

I am lucky to have a LFS which stocks many Eheims and quite a selection of parts and components. I don't think I've had to go to the importers directly - the LFS takes care of it for me..

I bought a brand new Ecco Pro from a local reefer: NIB. Within a couple of months, the canister cracked. LFS said it would cost ~$50! Called corporate & they would do nothing, without a receipt. Not good PR, if you adk me...
