Small shelled foods

So I assumed this would have been a common question but my search results came back with nothing so here it goes.
I have been feeding my puffers clams on the half shell, table shrimp, mysis, and seaweed strips for as Long as I can remember but I always hoped I would stumble across a shelled food that was small enough for them the crunch on and wear down their teeth. Ones a porcupine and the other is a Stars and Stripes both under 5" so I havent seen much that will fit in those little mouths yet. So far they just suck the clams out of their shells without even touching the shells.
I've been considering buying 12 or so larger snails and just letting them go in my refugium and hoping they breed there undisturbed and then I can use them as feeders. Any thoughts?
