what I do is take a handfull of salt (wet) and then scrub the glass using my hand with the salt...sort of like exfoliating. Rub in circles. I normally do this in the bathtub to keep things wet and so I can rinse well.

Cheap and harmless to the fish.

Diluted vinegar in water scrubbed on with a old toothbrush and a scotch pad does wonders. Do a partial water change if you think too much vinegar seeped into the tank water but it should be diluted enough to be safe for fish.

I've only every used straight vinegar on a paper towel left on the glass to sit. After a while I scrub. If it doesn't all come off then I repeat.

I use Scotch Bright pads too. I just keep things very wet and apply light pressure.
