Sad loss

This morning my f8 was swimming funny and would not eat. Did a water change, after checking levels (which seemed rather ok) he seemed fine the day before. I woke up later (I work nights), to find my little buddy floating. 
the 29 gal had cycled @ 2 weeks at innitial set up, had him in it for the last 3-4 weeks. Ph- 8.1 temp-80 nitrates<10ppm nitrites-0ppm salt-1005. Ammonia -0. Weekly water change (one done 3 days before incident). Food- snails, crickets, potato bugs 1-2 times a day 6 days per week. Only other tank mates include 3 ghost shrimp he never had interest in eating.. I would like to try again, but want to do it right... Am I missing something? I thought I did everything right.
