I'm looking to get a puffer for my 20 gal. It's fully cycled and everything. Anybody have suggestions on the right puffer to put in? I wan't one that is active and not skittish. What are my options?

Check out http://www.pufferlist.com. You may want to look into irrubescos as well. How is your tank staying cycled?

Dwarf Puffers, Irrubesco and SAP puffers are the best options.

I personally wouldn't put a SAP in a 20-gallon.

Is the tank empty right now? How are you keeping it cycled?

the tank currently has one salvini cichlid and some misc. fry from before he offed his mate. i'm giving those fish to a friend once i do my research on puffers

sorry i forgot to mention that i was looking to see if there were any other options besides dwarf puffers? like a lone specimen in a 20. if dwarfs are my only option than i'll go that route but prefer a single specimen.

Did you check out the Puffer List? There are quite a few FW species you could keep.

Yea I'm actually looking at thepufferlist right now. Tetraodon turgidus seems interesting. It says that it's a lurker/ambush predator. Those aren't as active as the hunter/seeker puffers correct? I want one that will swim around and be active. That is way I'm getting rid of my Salvini. The salvini is a beautiful fish but so shy compared to my other fish (Cuban Cichlid in a 60 gal). I know personality can vary from fish to fish but do Tetraodon Turgidus tend to be active and not shy?

Turgs will not be active at all in the day, at night they are very active. They will hide out all day unless being fed in my experiance.

ok then turgs are not for me i guess. also you guys really think a 20 is not suitable for an SAP? pufferlist says "15, 20 better" also i'm confused about what i've read about figure 8 puffers. are they freshwater or brackish? it seems like it depends on what site i'm reading.

Well, I'm only going by the pufferlist, which states 15 as the minimum.

20g is fine for a SAP. My personal opinion is 2 would fit in there. My turgidus nevere leaves his flowerpot cave, except to eat.

I've kept a lot of singleton SAPs in 15s without seeing any issues. A 20 long would allow more linear swimming space, but a well set 15 may be better than a poorly set 20-long, so as usual, much depends on the setup.

I did not mean to imply that it would be bad to keep a SAP in a 20. I just personally feel that such active fish deserve, and are best viewed in, a larger aquarium. This is personal opinion, and keeping a SAP in a 20-gallon will not stunt its growth.
