So I have an eheim 2028 sitting empty, I really want to add this to my fahaka tank alongside: another eheim 2028, eheim 2329, and a sun sun ( was gonna loose this one but it can stay for now, did disconnect it but added it back on but thats another story lol) the question is do I just buy media to fill it with or can I do something a little different for example porus rock rubble? Or any other ideas that would work? Thanks

I'd buy the media. Probably get it from Amazon. I put filter floss in them, too.

I mufti-filter all of my tanks. But I never do conventional all-on-one-unit packing. That requires entirely too much upkeep for me. Conventionally packed external canisters are nitrate factories, just as are conventional W/Ds. Most of my external canisters (all Eheim) are bio-only with in-tank mechanical prefilter intakes. A few have the in-tank prefilters and the external unit is empty, just a controled fine-tuning current device. In large tanks, it takes me a while to fine-tune the current.
The in-tank mech pre-fiters are rinsed weeky (with canister off), the bio-only canisters are back-flushed monthly during the first of the weekly water changes. The net effect is much lower nitrate operating levels in the tank as the mech media is not there long enough to compost/decompose captured organics.
More equipment wisely used is more power sage per tank and per gallon, but higher water quality consistently.
