I do have a plecy in there and it is freshwater. I have the GPS in fresh water right now. I raised a figure 8 for over a year and he made it in freshwater. I was told the puffer I bought unfortunately, from Wal-mart, was born in fresh water. I want to convert my tank to a brackish water, but I really am leary to attempt the brackish water and have it too strong or something.

Considering F8s live to 20 years, a year isn't very long. What happened to it?

I moved from 1 apartment to another back in February and right after the move is when my old f8 puffer got sick. He immediately lost his appetite immediately after the move, then grew some sort of weird fungus on his body. I tried all I could to get rid of it. Ich treatments, added salts, water changes, yet it still persisted. It took him almost 30 days to finally die. It was horrible. I felt so bad. :(

This is because his immune system was compromised in freshwater. :( Please do better for your GSP.

add in stress from the move.

gsps can be kept in freshwater when young though. So you can use this time to ask questions about how to keep brachish water and eventually marine.

there are many many fish that spawn in FW but live in SW. Think of a salmon that goes from the ocean to a FW river spawn. Where they were born sometimes has little relevance on where they "live".

Welcome to the site. Your little Puffer looks very happy and much healthier than most I have seen that were purchased from WalMart.

Like the others have said, you can start them out in freshwater but he will do better if moved to brackish water then to full marine later. Saltwater is IMHO much easier than the brackish.

You may have made a mistake or two with your F8 puffer (many of us have made mistakes like these), but now you have found this site. If anyone can help you raise this puffer to live a wonderful long life it will be the wonderful people on this site. Take your time and read as many articles as you can.....they are all so knowledgeable you can only benefit from the people on this site!
