The Puffer Forum

So I have been with out a puffer for two years now because the person I had taking care of my 5 year old GSP when I was on vacation killed mine. But Happy news today I just bought a new GSP. I went to a LFS to brows on my lunch break (kind of dork like that) and there it was a cute little GSP. Stores around me never have puffers. They actually had him in a brackish (1 point for this new LFS)! As I stood back and watched one of the workers there put in snails to eat (2 points).

He looks a little different than the GSP's I am used to. I will post some pics when I get a chance.He looks good with a bright white belly very round and active. The difference is he has perfectly round circles not blotchy if that makes sense and he doesn't have the bright green coloring on top its more of a greenish bronze color going all the way down to the white belly. I figure its just a slight color variant but look really nice.

He will be going into a 75 gallon that has a bunch of river rocks, driftwood, and fake plants to keep him occupied. I am not sure what if anything I will be keeping with him. I have had luck with mollies and monos before but might let him have the tank to himself.

Sounds awesome! Good luck to that! I keep my GSP's with shrimp and crabs for them to hunt down and munch on.

Mine do have variation with their appearance too does it look like any of these?

Yes mine looks like the top pick you have. The ones I am used to seeing have the the bright neon green up top and the rest is grey behind the black spots. The one I had before was much like your bottom pic but more yellow.

How big did your deceased one get? I have had mine for 3 months and they already grew nearly an inch! They are are my first puffers.

My deceased one got about 3.5 to 4" He was in full marine at that point.

Before I even had the internet in my house and was just going purely on what I was told by my LFS. The first puffer I had for years was also between 3.5" and 4" when I sold it (which I now regret) and it was in fresh water with cherry barbs and black mollies. He was the exception to all the standards non aggressive except toward snails which he ate eagerly. I wonder if size growth has to do with salinity or if it is more the cleanliness of the water.

This one will be in a full brackish tank, holding off on full marine until it get much bigger if ever.
