My GSP's lay at the bottom of the tank when they are resting... regardless the substrate. It does not hurt them.

Hi welcome to the forum!

How often does he lay around? does he appear to have trouble breathing or running into things?

what color is his belly?

If the sand seems to stick to their bellies, do not worry as its just their slime coat that causes that to happen. The currents of the water will wash it off shortly.
